An Absolutely Fabulous Life June Whitfield in conversation with John Miller
|

Younger television viewers will associate the name of June
Whitfield with Last of the Summer Wine and Absolutely
Fabulous, but her long career embraces much more than that,
which her new illustrated book shows in all its rich variety. She
has worked with all the comic greats since graduating from
RADA at the end of the War: Arthur Askey, Wilfred Pickles,
Jimmy Edwards, Bob Monkhouse, Tony Hancock, Ronnie
Barker, Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan, Benny Hill, Tommy Cooper, Dick Emery, Terry
Scott, Frankie Howerd, Roy Hudd, Kenneth Williams, Julian Clary, Joanna Lumley
and Jennifer Saunders. As she says in her book: "I have enjoyed working with
many comics, so many that my good friend Roy Hudd christened me 'the comics'
tart’ – thanks, Roy."
June has been profiled on The South Bank Show, This Is Your Life (twice), and
recently BBC2 devoted a whole evening to her work, with a full-length documentary
and repeats from several of her earlier shows. Her gifts as a raconteur are what
one might expect from those six decades of comic experience.
