| Susie Dent is an English lexicographer, best known as the
resident dictionary expert and adjudicator on Channel 4’s
long-running game show Countdown. From 2003-2007 she
was the author of annual Language Reports for the Oxford
University Press, in 2008 she published Words of the Year,
and in 2009 What Made The Crocodile Cry? 101 Questions
about the English Language. Her latest book is How to Talk
Like a Local. She examines the remarkable contribution that Samuel Johnson made to the way that we use and perceive the English language, in particular the revolutionary changes that he introduced in his Dictionary of the English Language: an enormous undertaking in which Johnson illustrates his (often very subjective) definitions using examples from the best writers of his day. His Preface to the Dictionary is highly illuminating in revealing the changes of attitude towards the description of English that he experienced as his work progressed. |

| Endymion Ensemble, celebrating their 30th birthday this year, bring three jewels of the chamber repertoire to the medieval Hospital of St Cross. Composed a century apart, both the pieces for clarinet and string quartet have proved to be among their composers’ best loved works, full of rich and lyrical beauty. Contrast is provided by Schubert’s Bb String Trio, one of the great works written for this combination of instruments. |
